Prominent Tamil Editor Vithyatharan abducted in Colombo!

The 'white van' abduction of the senior Tamil journalist in Colombo this morning (26th Feb 2009) marks a new round of escalation on the attacks on the rights of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. The two Tamil newspapers that Mr. Vithyatharan writes for, the Jaffna based 'Uthayan' daily and the Colombo based 'Sudar Oli' inevitably reports on the terrible fate faced by the Tamils encircled in the Vanni and under constant bombardment by the Sri Lankan armed forces. The dreadful foreboding of an imminent genocide is shared even in the British parliament. If Mr. Vithyatharan is successfully silenced, this will be seen as a signal to the Tamils living in Colombo and in the North and East that any kind of political protest against the actions of the Sri Lankan army in Vanni will be met by brutal violence.
