Letter from Kemal

March 28, 2008

Schwäbisch Hall

Dear Friends;

After five months of being under custody I am once again among you. The value of freedom is understood once it is lost and is very precious even when it is not complete. I am saluting all of you with deep sense of longing and gratitude.

It would have been extremely saddening for me to be extradited hand-cuffed and chained (“in a package” as they say) as someone who had survived all the years of tricks and attacks of the Turkish state. I knew all along the dark motives of the Turkish state. My life was at risk. The Turkish state presented me as a terrorist in order to ease my extradition. As soon as the news of my arrest reached the Turkish state new decisions were made in relation to me and the Turkish legal system was instrumental in this process.

My lawyers both in Germany and Turkey-Kurdistan, the committee leading the campaign for my freedom, the democratic organizations, institutions and individuals, the solidarity committee and my relatives and those friends who are close to me spend extraordinary effort in order to stop this injustice and to let the real truth to be known. The comprehensive defense case prepared as a result allowed the courts looking after my extradition case to see the situation more completely and understand the reality. At the end the courts hearing my extradition case made the correct decision and released me on the date of March 28, 2008.

This positive outcome occurred to a great extent as a result of your collective efforts. Not only have you given a lot of support but also protected my life.

For this reason I would like to extend my gratitude and to thank my lawyers, all those friends, parliamentarists, academics, writers, artists and all other intellectuals, democratic parties, human rights organizations, all media institutions, the solidarity committee and last but not the least to all my friends and relatives who have been in solidarity with me in Europe, Turkey-Kurdistan and all around the world.

I would also like to thank the High Court and the Department of Foreigners in spite of the delayed decision for my release. I believe that this decision have served the common humane and democratic values of all the peoples of the world.

All around the world there are many people who are prisoned for struggling for a better world to live. I have been released, but they are still in prison. I am hoping that they also win their freedom immediately. Those prisoners and people living thorough great suffering must not be forgotten. The world is ours and another world that is better to live is possible.

Sincerely,

Kemal Kutan
