The Caravan for the Rights of Refugees and Migrants invites you to:

Information and Discussion on the recent developments in Nigeria -

on Friday, 6 th October 2000, at 7.00 pm (19.00 hrs)
in Bauhof/Frankische Stiftung in Halle (close to Frankenplatz/Steinstraße)

and the Campaign against the deportation of the Nigerian Refugee Adebayo Alabi -

As a member of the Campaign for Democracy (CD) and the O`odua Peoples Congress (OPC) Adebayo Alabi played an active role in the struggle against the military dictatorship of General Sani Abacha in Nigeria. In the spring 1998 he was arrested during a demonstration and tortured in custody. In early June 1998 he managed to escape to Germany.
Since his account of his ordeal was not  „vivid enough“, the Bundesamt and German courts insinuated that he was not credible and therefor rejected his application for asylum. Although his petition to the administrative court in Magdeburg is still in process. He can be deported any time - back to torture and persecution if not outright elimination in accordance with Obasanjos` order.

Western governments and multinational companies have been extending their economic relations with Nigeria since the inception of  General Olusegun Obasanjo in May 1999. They hurriedly praise the crisis-prone country for its democratic development whereas nothing has really changed, for behind the civil face and clothes of General Obasanjo and his regime lies the same old military control.

Just recently pictures of the military invasion  of Odi town in the Niger Delta was seen all over the world. This was the president`s reaction to the people’s protest against exploitation and environmental pollution. The whole town was wiped out. Those who could not escape were massacred by the Nigerian soldiers who were obeying orders from the president. Odi was simply an example. The Obasanjo regime wanted to demonstrate to western oil companies and governments, that it can enforce order in the in the oil-rich Niger Delta and that business can continue as usual.

The OPC, which Adebayo Alabi is a member, has played a leading role in the opposition to military dictatorship. It has provided a solid ground for Self-Determination and the practice of true federalism. The OPC’s struggle does endanger the old, lob-sided and domineering power base and leadership of the country, that remained untouched in spite of Obasanjos inauguration. Consequently the OPC is rigorously persecuted even to the acknowledgement of the German court. In November 1999 General Obasanjo issued the scandalous order that members of the OPC and their sympathisers who resisted arrest should be shot on sight. He repeated this order very recently in a BBC interview. This singular order has led to the death of hundreds of peple and many innnocent citizens detained.
Adebayo Alabi`s active participation in the OPC coupled with his exile political activities renders him undoubtedly threatened should he be forced to return Nigeria.
You are invited to participate in this discussion on the recent developments in Nigeria and the future of the campaign to stop the deportation of Adebayo Alabi.
