Deportation threat for an eighteen
year old Kurd who had lived in Germany since he was 10!
Stop Garbi Yildirim's deportation!
When in the eighties the Kurdish population came under increased attack
from the Turkish military, the Kurdish family Yildirim sent their two children
to a relative in Germany, in order to protect them from the terror in Turkey.
The now 18 year old Garbi Yildirim lived since he was ten years old in
Lilienthal, he grew up and was socialised here. As a migrant, he grew up
in two cultures. He was under strong pressure under family structures and
at the same time was confronted injustice in Germany.
From the day that Garbi and his brother arrived in Germany, aged Ten
and Nine until now they have had to struggle to survive. They had to struggle
to try free themselves from the debilitating effects poverty and systematic
racial discrimination from the establishment and from society. Garbi and
his friends had to often resist racist attacks by neo-fascists and "normal"
racism, all of these are strongly represented in Lilienthal and its surroundings.
Further being Kurdish brought him into confrontation with the so-called
"grey wolves" - the Turkish fascists.
The systematic discrimation of "foreigners", which is the basis
of the foreigners' law, also strongly effected Garbi's life. He came more
and more frequently in difficulties with the law, which were symptomatic
of the problems that Garbi finds himself today.
Almost immediately after he came of age, Garbi Yildirim was without
warning given deportation order to Turkey by the end of July. The deportation
will mean that, as a Kurd, he is to face social repression and state terror
by the Turkish regime. Additionally he will be forced to do military service.
He categorically rejects military service, because - as a Kurd - this will
mean aiming weapons against his own people. The tragic case of the Kurdish
conscientious objector Sueleyman Aksoy shows what Garbi will be exposed
to if he is deported. Sueleyman Aksoy was deported in February 1999 to
Turkey and after a two-day intorrogation by the airport police, transferred
directly to the military authorities in Ankara. Three months later, his
family was handed over the body of Sueleyman Aksoy, who was alleged to
have committed suicide. Against official orders, the family opened the
coffin and found a completely mutilated and disfigured body - obviously
no suicide.
Social and ethnic cleansing
Some influential political figures in Germany have been openly talking
of second generation migrant youth being in excess to requirement for the
economic system in Germany. They are arguing that these youth are under-qualified,
have no respect for the German law and are engaged in 'unlawful activity'
and have no place in German society. In fact the number of people who would
normaly have the right to stay in Germany but are deported due to criminal
activity is rapidly increasing. The politics of criminalisation is deeply
connected to deportation practice. As unemployement in Germany increases
the rich are also getting richer. Cynical and opportunist politicians will
defend the system and the status quo by trying to turn, any legitimate
anger that the poor will have against the rich, towards the refugees and
also migrants. Poisonous statements from the politicians are finding a
chilling resonance within German society. Deportation of Garbi is part
of this relentless trend that all those who oppose racism must make a stand.
No to double punishment for foreigners!
Garbi was arrested and taken to a criminal procedure on 3 August 1999
directed against his person and others. Garbi recieved a punishment according
to German law (a suspended sentence). If Garbi was a German this would
stop here. However, even though Garbi has been socialised almost completely
in Germany and even though he can hardly speak Turkish, he will recieve
an extra punishment - that is deportation to Turkey. As Garbi is Kurdish
this punishment will result in tragic consequences. Garbi was arrested
on Tuesday afternoon by judicial order, in order to preempt any protest
action against his deportation and to prevent an alleged "escape". On Thursday,
the 5.8. 99 he was taken to the deportation prison in Uelzen (Lower Saxony),
although his asylum request had in the meanwhile been submitted to the
Federal Office for acknowledgment of foreign refugees in Nuernberg. A crime
that would result in a suspended sentence or less for a German youth could
result in torture and even a death sentence for Garbi.
We urgently request all those concerned with justice to join the campaign
to stop the deportation of Garbi Yildirim!
