FLUCHTZEITEN - No One is illegal

Statement of the International Human Rights Asscociation

World-wide the number people fleeing persecution is increasing. At the same time the number of people who are deported from European countries is also increasing. During the beginning of the 90`s the German Government started the process to systematically destroy asylum rights for people fleeing persecution.

At the same time as arguing for opening of borders for free market policies, i.e., freedom for goods and capital to flow freely without regards to national borders, the rich industrialised countries including Europe are with military force and heartless laws, building fortresses around the borders to restrict the free movement of human beings, the producers of these goods and all this money.

Art is free. But human beings are everywhere in chains. How do artists use their freedom??. Do they use this freedom to try the express the condition of the refugees who are facing immense hardship in Germany?

In England, the Tony Blair has made a conscious effort to harness the capabilities of the artistic community in Britain and connect it to commercial interests. To a large extent he has succeeded. On the other hand in France the powerful movement of the refugees "Sans Papieres" provided a pole of attraction to the artists and the inteligencia - with the result that the combination managed to push the French State and force it to accept some of the demands of the refugees.

What will happen in Germany? Which way will the artistic community jump?

The International Human Rights Association - Bremen will work hard to connect the artists with Human Rights for the refugees. Hope you will join our work!
