Alex, a participant of the Hunger Strike has been arrested and is danger of being deported!

ALEX ALAYO CHAVEZ (Peru) a participant of the 'Caravan' Hunger Strike in Cologne Germany, was arrested on the way to a meeting in Hamburg on Tuesday the 8^th June. He is now in the Deportation Prison in Büren and is in imminent danger of being deported to Peru where he faces torture and death at the hands of the Fujimori regime. 

The Internationalist 'Hunger Strike for Justice' of the 'Caravan for Rights of the Refugees and Migrants' took place in Köln Germany during the period between the EU and the G8 summits and included participants from Africa (Cameroon, Nigeria and Togo), Asia (Sri Lanka, Tamil Eelam), Latin America (Peru), Middle East (Kurdistan) and a supporter from the USA. The Hunger Srike started onn the 4^th June (EU summit) and ended on the 19^th June (G8 Summit)

Alex, fully conscious of the risk to his life, took this brave stand for international solidarity and to contribute to building a powerful movement based on the refugees and their principled supporters. We cannot allow Alex to be deported and we cannot allow that he is tortured and killed.

Most urgently we ask all to send faxes to:

1) The Foreigners Police Unna, which issued the arrest warrant, which if taken back will free Alex from captivity: Fax number: + 49 2303 272199

2) The 'Bundesamt' or 'BAFI' the authority which makes a determination regarding asylum cases - which is at this moment determining whether Alex will be accepted as a political refugee: Fax number: +49 521 931 6399

For more information about Alex's case please look in our Internet Web Site ../../../ or phone us for details, which we can fax you. We advice you to refrain from adding unnecessary slogans like 'smash all immigration laws', 'open all borders' 'death to imperialism' as these do not convince the authorities to be positive on Alex's case. In our experience the most effective letters have been those which stick to the facts of the case.

We ask you also to send this fax to all your contacts as we need a really powerful campaign to stop Alex's deportation.

There are several committees to defend Alex, and we urge people to start one. We will have posters and leaflets which we can send you. This letter and various parts of the material in Alex's case is available in, German, English, Spanish, French, Italian and Turkish.

Dr. Ludger Weckel from the Institute for Theology and Politics in Münster and Fr. Norbert Happe (a Catholic Priest) has agreed to accompany Alex to Peru to give him a little protection if we cannot stop the deportation.

We urgently need financial support - for the Lawyer, for the publicity etc. etc. Please organise benefit parties etc., to collect money for Alex's Campaign
