URGENT ALERT TO SUPPORT STANDING DEER
An Internet bulletin issued on Feb. 4 says that Native political prisoner
and elder Standing Deer Wilson has been placed in the hole at Huntsville
Penitentiary in Texas and is being denied his medication.
Standing Deer, now in his mid-70s, is a longtime activist for the rights
of Native and all prisoners. When in Marion Federal Penitentiary 20 years
ago, he was offered his freedom if he would take part in a federal government
conspiracy to assassinate American Indian Move ment leader Leonard Peltier.
Standing Deer refused and revealed the plot.
What reason is being given for this current punishment of Standing Deer?
He has been accused of writing a poem that authorities deem "terrorist."
Standing Deer says he did not write the poem, which was published a
few years ago in a book about political prisoners. The authorities could
hardly come up with a more absurd pretext for increasing their repression
against Standing Deer.
People are encouraged to fax, call and send letters demanding that the
harassment of Standing Deer be stopped immediately.
