To the Administrative Court in Bremen Az: 4K 667/01.A Altenwall 6 28195 Bremen fax: 0049-421-361-6797
I am shocked to hear about the threatened deportation of the 24 years old Tamil refugee and peace activist Rajan A. He was arrested at the ‘foreigners police’ on 4th of March 2002 and was put in the deportation prison in Bremen, even though the urgent application to the courts for deportation protection had yet to be decided. We know he is on Hunger Strike since last Tuesday morning to protest against this treatment and his deportation. At the age of 17 Rajan A. fled from the Northern civil war area in Sri
Lanka to Germany, because he feared for his life and did not want to fight
with a weapon.
We understand that he played a leading to organise protest actions when President Chandrika came for a visit to Germany. He mobilised people onto the streets to say to the German population and specially to the German government that Chandrika was the obstacle to peace in Sri Lanka. This was one year ago. However, despite these protests the German government insisted that Chandrika was the key to peace and that the completely have faith that she will bring peace to Sri Lanka. History has proven that Rajan was right. Even though Chandrika’s party has lost the elections and even though the new government has a popular mandate to pursue the Norwegian backed peace talks, Chandrika is misusing her position as President to try to sabotage the peace plans by mobilising Sinjhala chauvinist forces. We believe Germany should be optimistic about the peace process in Sri Lanka. Instead of thinking of it as a window of opportunity to deport Tamil refugees with obscene haste, it should admit that it should have listened more to peace loving refugees like Rajan and put pressure on Chandrika to stop sabotaging the peace moves by Norway. The German government can still do this. I am also convinced that because of his high profile activities in Germany - Rajan will be seen as a supported of the LTTE in Sri Lanka and will therefore be under threat from a wide array of forces. Further I understand that during the eight years that Rajan A. has lived
and worked in Bremen, he has conducted himself in an exemplary manner and
has made every effort to integrate with German society.
I appeal to you to be aware of the danger that will threaten Rajan`s
life, if he is going to be deported, to stop the deportation by your positive
judgement and to accept him as political refugee.
