Fears of Maoist insurgence lead to Nepali film ban
THE ARTS REPORT - CBC Radio

The mountainous country of Nepal has banned the film Aago, which depicts the Maoist insurgence that has plagued the country for the past four years.

KATMANDU - Nepal has banned a film about the Maoist insurgence that has plagued the country for the past four years.

A spokesperson for the censor board says Aago, which translates to Fire, has been banned because it sought to encourage insurgent activities by the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist).

The Maoist arty has been campaigning to overthrow Nepal's constitutional monarchy. More than 1000 people have been killed since the Maoist revolt started in 1996.

A spokesperson for the film says the restoration of parliamentary democracy 10 years ago has not brought artistic freedom.

The producers can appeal the censor board's decision. Nepal has a small film industry that produces about 30 feature films a year. This is the first time that the screening of a Nepali film has been banned.
