Krishna Sen, Janadesh

Imprisoned: April 20, 1999

Police arrested Sen, editor of the Nepali-language weekly Janadesh, and seized thousands of copies of the newspaper. Sen was reportedly arrested in connection with a recent issue of Janadesh that featured an interview with Babaram Bhattarai, one of the leaders of Nepal's Maoist insurgency.

Police reportedly confiscated 20,000 copies of the edition in order to prevent the interview from being widely read. Sen was still in custody at the end of December and he had to be hospitalized at year's end because of harsh prison conditions, according to CPJ's sources.

Die Polizei verhaftete Sen, Herausgeber der Wochenzeitung in nepalesischer Sprache,
Janadesh, und beschlagnahmte Tausende von Exemplaren der Zeitung. Sens Verhaftung steht angeblich in Verbindung mit einer kürzlichen Ausgabe von Janadesh, in der ein Interview mit Babaram Bhattarai, einem der Führer von Nepals maoistischem Aufstand, erschien.

Die Polizei soll 20.000 Exemplare der Ausgabe beschlagnahmt haben, um die weitere Verbreitung des Interviews zu unterbinden. Ende Dezember befand sich Sen noch in Haft. Zu Jahresende wurde er den Quellen von CPJ zufolge aufgrund der schlechten Haftbedingungen ins Krankenhaus eingeliefert.
